Harry Mitchell recently created a petition on this website to voice his opinion about the Growth Mindset programme run by Kesgrave High School. He personally believed it to be a waste of time, and attempted to change what he perceived to be a flawed system by creating a petition.
The school, being the ones who implemented this programme, naturally disagreed with Harry, but rather than respecting his fundamental right to freedom of speech and right to protest, they forced him to remove the petition and punished him for "defiant behaviour", and he is now being monitored.
This is unacceptable. Every citizen of the United Kingdom is guaranteed the right to freedom of speech and the right to protest as per Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998. According to the Educational Institute of Scotland, "All public bodies in the UK, including local authorities, must ensure that legislation, procedures and regulations are compatible" with the Act. According to gov.uk, Academies are "classified by the Office for National Statistics as central government public sector bodies. While academies are responsible for their own financial management, they are subject to public standards of accountability", therefore the school is a public body and is legally obligated to abide by the Act. The school should not need to be reminded that not abiding by the terms of the Human Rights Act 1998 is breaking the law.
I, and the ones who sign this petition, therefore request that the school recognise Harry Mitchells's actions not as "defiant behaviour" (his actions in no way disrupted the education of other students) but as exercising his rights which are guaranteed by the Human Rights Act 1998, and also that the school drop all disciplinary measures against Harry Mitchell.
