Support Increased Childcare Services for Student-Parents at Massey University Auckland

Many students at Massey University are also parents.  Currently, University semester dates do not align with public primary and secondary school holidays. Student-parents are faced with the task of juggling parenting responsibilities such as adequate childcare whilst still keeping up with their studies. Managing study and parenting responsibilities is especially challenging during school holidays, when student-parents have to both provide childcare and attend lectures. This is a disadvantage for some student-parents at Massey University. Massey University Manawatu campus currently has successful comprehensive childcare services - Massey University Auckland does not. In fact, Massey University Auckland only has one childcare support service for under 5 year olds, with a capacity of only 40 and a waitlist of approximately 8 months. This is not sufficient and needs to be remedied.

We believe that the implementation of childcare programs on Auckland campus during these school holiday periods will help student-parents keep up with the demands of tertiary study.
