Joel Diaz started this petition to Kern country board of education

Learning another language has been proven to increase one's attention span, build stronger multitasking skills, improve memory, and even offset Alzheimers disease and dementia. And in a monolingual country such as ours, it should be of the utmost importance to ensure that children learn another language, beginning at a young age.

It should be required, as it is in most developed countries, to learn another language to a high degree of proficiency. Not only for the sake of the aforementioned benefits, but also to build bridges across cultures in the diverse country and world we live in.

Moreover, it was once part of classical American education to learn a foreign language to a high level. In fact, about half of U.S Presidents knew another language, because in their day one could not be truly a well rounded individual without doing so.

This however has been lost in our time. And it is time that it be brought back. For the sake of our country's wellbeing and that of our country's children. Furthermore, schools with similar programs already exist, where children will come out knowing another language, but it is time that this be available for all students in the U.S. beginning in the first grade.
