The Code of Federal Regulations outlines concrete measures required for the display of a United States of America flag.  (Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8)  This is the law.  Yet Kentucky Department of Transportation has sanctioned flag themed vanity license plates that clearly violate this law.  As a result, it has misinformed some of its well intentioned citizens to violate Federal law and show wanton disrespect for our nations flag.

The flag as a symbol represents everyone and no-one.  The United States Congress has seen fit to fix this into law.  As such it has recorded into written language the various specifically defined circumstances to guide representation of the flag.

Kentucky vanity license plates use a background image of the flag.  The image is not complete but abbreviated or furled.  There are numbers and writing superimposed on the image.  And the entire motif is used for advocacy.

The flag is not just symbolic.  It is a living manifestation of the USA.  Treatment of it with respect and thoughtfulness is something every citizen should find agreeable.
