Sign this petition in support of enhancing the quality and availability of mental health services for ALL Kentuckians. We need legislation that require Kentucky mental health providers to complete a minimum of three (3) hours of continuing education (CE) focused on "cultural diversity"  every 3 years.  Currently Kentucky mental health providers have a requirement to complete CEs in suicide prevention, domestic violence, ethics.  It is also important that mental health providers are skilled in meeting the needs of diverse communities across Kentucky.

We are in the middle of two pandemics in this country.  We have the medical pandemic of COVID-19 that has disproportionately affected black and brown communities.  According to Dr. Sandra L. Shullman, PhD, President of the American Psychological Association, "We are living in a racism pandemic, which is taking a heavy psychological toll on our African American citizens. The health consequences are dire. Racism is associated with a host of psychological consequences, including depression, anxiety and other serious, sometimes debilitating conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders."

As a result of these two pandemics, the increased need for mental health services and the need for culturally competent mental health providers is a public health issue.  A couple of states require CEs in "cultural diversity"  for initial and renewal of licensure for their mental health providers (i.e., psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, etc.). “Cultural diversity” includes aspects of identity stemming from age, disability, gender, race/ethnicity, religious/spiritual orientation, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and other cultural dimensions.
