Jay Puryear started this petition to Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources and

For far to many years the Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife has neglected the paying outdoorsman/outdoors women and youth of the commonwealth. The spring turkey season has become a much awaited time to be afield for countless hunters. But with the Department’s same old approach. Hunters continue to struggle to have a lengthy enjoyable and successful spring turkey season. The proposed petition will hopefully help increase hunter days afield but also increase conservation efforts for the wild turkey.

For nearly 25 years spring turkey season has started the middle of April and lasted only three weeks. The Department of Fish and Wildlife states that this season is in place to give the species the best opportunity for breeding. In actuality, breeding dates vary across the states counties and turkeys can actually start breeding in March in southern latitudes of our state and with an outstanding and stable population in the state flock the season is far overdue for a change. With the payment of hunting licenses funding state conservation acts and salaries of the Department of Fish and Wildlife employees. You would think the people would have a say.

We are asking the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and the legislatures of the Commonwealth to bring a renewed life to spring turkey season.
We are proposing the lengthening of spring turkey season across the commonwealth by zoning out the counties in a similar manner to the current deer seasons. This would provide a way to micro manage our state flock. With some counties showing a decline in populations and some showing a stable or increasing population. The KDFWR would be able to set season regulations that would benefit the flock in such counties/zones. But it needs to be known that in southern counties of the commonwealth the current season start is too late. Hunters having witnessed countless seasons in which peak breeding was initiated in March and that hens are actually in the incubation period when season starts, need their seasons started around the second weekend in April and continuing until a period KDFWR see fit based on management practices for population growth/stability.  With counties in the northern half being in peak breeding during April. Their seasons would benefit from a current season (third week of April) start date and continuing until KDFWR see fit based on management practices for population growth/stability. So overall a total of 4 weeks would be held across the commonwealth between zone start and end dates for spring turkey season.

With the youth being the future of our state and of the hunting community it is our responsibility to give them the best possible opportunity at a successful hunt. Youth weekend would be scheduled for the weekend prior to the proposed zoned/county season.

We are not asking to increase bag limits only asking that we may have a more impactful opportunity on the overall conservation of the commonwealths turkey flock and with the zoned areas would increase hunter/youth opportunities to be afield with family and friends and enjoy the commonwealths stunning beauty and game.
