Victoria Cole started this petition to Kenny MacAskill

Kenny MacAskill was voted to represent the people of East Lothian in Westminster as a member of the SNP. However, he has made the arbitrary decision to move to the Alba party. There are a number of people who have significant concerns with Mr MacAskill's decision, for several reasons.

Many people are outraged that our representative in Parliament has made this decision with no concern for the opinion of all those in East Lothian whom he is obliged to represent.  Not one of us has had the opportunity to vote for the Alba party and so this decision is not merely undemocratic, it is also immoral and unjust. If Mr MacAskill believes that his actions are justified, then he should have the courage  to stand down from his post and stand for re-election. Every democratic principle demands this.

Another grave concern is that Mr MacAskill is now a member of a party that is led by Alex Salmond. This man's behaviour has been inexcusable. It must be stated that Mr Salmond was found 'not guilty' of sexual abuse at trial. However, even Mr Salmond's legal team admitted that he acted 'inappropriately' and was 'very touchy-feely'. Mr Salmond himself admits to 'high jinks' and wishes that he had respected women's personal space, not because he acknowledges that his behaviour caused distress but because he found himself in trouble.

Mr Salmond has offered no statement of apology or regret for his behaviour. Instead he has said that we should move on from the trial and that we should put it all behind us. How offensive to the women who have suffered humiliation and disrespect at his hands!

Kenny MacAskill has staunchly defended Mr Salmond at every turn and has dimissed the complaints of these women as 'bunkum', 'flimsy and even absurd allegations'. This is not the attitude that I want, or will tolerate, from the man who represents the women of East Lothian in Parliament. As a woman of middle age, I have a lifetime of experiences of 'inappropriate', though not 'criminal', behaviour from men. Tragically, my daughter at 23 has also had more experience of such behaviour than I would have ever wished for her to have. My youngest daughter, 15, is almost certainly going to experience the same behaviour because society has deemed it acceptable for men to behave 'inappropriately' as long as they are not guilty of criminal behaviour.

Anyone aware of the work of the 'Me Too' movement understands that behaviour doesn't need to be criminal to be unacceptable. Any behaviour by anyone, (but especially people in authority), that causes someone else to feel uncomfortable, humiliated or afraid is unacceptable. It is not possible for any of us to remain neutral in such situations. If we don't condemn bullying and intimidating behaviour, then we support it. There is no middle ground!

By joining the Alba party, regardless of the will of the people of East Lothian, Mr MacAskill has shown extremely poor judgement at best and contempt for his constituents at worst

Please sign my petition asking Mr MacAskill to stand down as MP for East Lothian and then to stand for re-election as the Alba candidate
