KSU Marietta Campus Housing WiFi - Unsecured, but Mostly Nonexistent
Why this petition matters
For too long, Kennesaw State University’s Marietta Campus has been treated as the unwanted campus of the institution, and that has now led to the interruption of WiFi in student housing - on the technology based campus. KSU has the ability to give a multi-million dollar facelift to the entrance of their main campus in Kennesaw; however, on the Marietta campus, we have lost the ability to provide our own secure network to complete school work within the confines of our own dorms and apartments. Over the summer, the company Apogee entered all apartments, dorms, and houses on the Marietta campus to cut all connection to and cover all access to Ethernet ports within student units and to install their WiFi on the MyResNet platform, a product that any technology products will recognize as an unsecured network and advise against connecting to it. This leaves all students susceptible to vishing scams, data theft, and overall information theft, the latter being something the university should be very concerned about due to their implementation of the Duo Authentication process (one that can be bypassed by a student-written script, but that’s beside the point. KSU has even more issues than just this WiFi issue, and they are well aware of most, if not all them).
KSU has decided to enact this change on a campus where there is an overall general understanding about how the internet should function, and this is truly unacceptable. This issue might be better if we were constantly emailed warnings of outages, but no such thing has occurred since the problem has arisen.
While there are locations across campus that allow students to use KSU sponsored internet connections, those places do close down overnight. If anyone knows anything about college students, it’s that we have to work past those closing hours to complete all of our school work, leaving us out of luck if we need to work on a night where the internet is most likely out, again. This incompetently executed, poorly judged change has negatively affected all students on this campus - students that pay anywhere from $2,475 to $3,900 A SEMESTER to the university to live in less than stellar housing.
By signing this petition, you would be sending a message to the institution of Kennesaw State University that this is not an isolated incident, and that change needs to be enacted now. **This is not to say that the housing staff is to blame for any of this. I’m putting this solely on the higher ups of the institution that mandate these changes.**
