Juvoni' Lopez started this petition to Kennesaw State University

The main goal of the Student Disability Services department is to provide accommodations to those who have any condition that may put them at a disadvantage from being successful both academically and with on-campus life. The department has been successful with guiding many students and assisting them in their day to day lives, helping to create many leaders on and off campus. The issue is that many students (mainly those with invisible disabilities) qualify and may benefit from receiving accommodations, but do not register with the department due to feeling uncomfortable describing themselves as “disabled” or simply not seeing themselves as so. Not receiving proper accommodations can greatly compromise a student’s overall success and potentially even create further issues including low confidence levels, ideations of dropping out, etc. Changing the department name to Student Accommodation Services eliminates any negative stigma that anyone may have with the department due to them no longer having to self-identify as “disabled” and is instead perceived as a hub of resources available to them. Many are already in support of this change including a number of student body presidents from across the state of Georgia and other leaders, as well. Multiple universities have also used alternative names including Georgia State University, Valdosta University, University of West Georgia, etc. This change will only ensure that the students who need to receive assistance are actually getting adequate help and that all students at Kennesaw State are able to receive equal opportunity to succeed.
