The Kennedy Center Honors have a longstanding tradition of inviting sitting Presidents to attend the Kennedy Center Honors, a program designated to highlight and award the lifetime achievements of well-deserving honorees. This year is no exception, with four out of five honorees being people of color.
Traditionally, the President of the United States hosts an awards ceremony at the White House and attends the celebration at the Kennedy Center. For the past 40 years, honorees and guests have checked their party politics at the door with appreciation for the office of the Presidency being represented at this weekend of festivities.
In the absence of American leadership, the signees call on Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter and the Board of Trustees to rescind the invitation of President Trump to this year's Kennedy Center Honors ceremony taking place on December 3rd, 2017.
As of now, two honorees are considering boycotting the awards reception as a result of President Trump's willingness to embrace hate and bigotry. No honoree should have to compromise having the opportunity to be awarded for the gift of their lifetime of art.
President Trump has no place at the Kennedy Center Honors.
