Christy Williams-Wood started this petition to Ken-Ton School district

Since May 2018 we have been asking Ken-Ton schools to participate in Unified sports.   Multiple districts big and small in the Western New York area have seen he benefits of unified programs in their schools.  Not only do these programs benefit students with intellectual disabilities, they benefit the school community as a whole, developing friendships, developing opportunities for inclusion, understanding and mutual support for everyone.

In May 2019 A meeting was held with Brett Banker, Athletic director of KTUFSD regarding unified sports.   The school board and many others went and observed other games at local schools and agreed it was time for Ken-Ton to become involved.  They were going to have two teams, one at Kenmore East and one at Kenmore West.  They had identified the coaches, and would be set to start their inaugural season in Spring 2020.

Our daughter has been advocating for this all along asking to "Have a high school experience, and play a sport like her brother, and maybe with her brother." She was very excited about unified sports only to have the season cancelled due to Covid.  She is extremely upset that she is not going to be allowed to play this year either.   Her friends in other school districts are all playing but yet again another year she is not able to play.

KenTon has had their varsity basketball teams play, and other sports play yet unified players are once again not allowed to play.  These athletes have had their Special Olympics track and field seasons also cancelled, and once again are left out.  The district has to do better.   They need to develop an inclusive environment and let the athletes play and foster new friendships.   In a time where our students have suffered a year of intense isolation, Unified sports can be a rainbow of hope.
