"Pants with holes are not permitted." "Pants may not be excessively tight (no leggings, tights, yoga style pants or sweat pants)." "Tops may not be excessively tight and sleeves must cover the shoulder." These are all direct quotes from the Gulf Middle school and Lee County dress code. They all target girls, specifically. These dress codes destroy a girl's self esteem, and overall give them a lot of stress. I should know, I am a girl that has been targeted by the dress code.

Dress codes were made to create a "distraction free" learning environment, but for who? For everyone, or for the boys? Is it a girls fault if a boy stares at them, or if he chooses to not focus on his work because she has leggings on? When a girl is sent out of the classroom to ISS or home to change, it disrupts their learning environment, so the boys can remain distraction free. This is sexist and should not be stood for. I am a girl and I know how hard it is to go to the store and try to find something that adheres to dress code. I know how it feels to go to school and be self conscious because you don't know if you're going to get dress coded or not. That's what we have come to. Feeling self conscious for showing our knees, or our shoulders. That's what this dress code has done to us and why you should sign this petition. To stand for change.
