Current policy states everyone must take semester exams the first semester and you can only have 2 excused absences the second semester to be exempt from exams, regardless of your grades. This can encourage kids who are sick to come to school thereby spreading illness and potentially harming those with weakened immune systems. This also can be discouraging for kids who are grade conscious and have worked hard to obtain an A/B in all subjects. It's seems to be a form of punishment for those who work hard yet have either fallen ill or have had doctor's appointments that cannot be scheduled after school or on breaks. It's not always easy to schedule appointments on non attendance days and places a burden parents and kids. I feel that kids should be rewarded for good grades and that by earning top grades, should not be required to take semester exams. It should be an incentive to work hard and earn good grades and not be punished because of absences beyond their control.

I propose the following changes be considered.

1. A student with an A or B for both quarters shall be exempt from semester exams regardless of how many excused absences.

2. A student with an A/B split, shall be allowed to choose whether or not they take an exam.

3. Any student with a grade lower than a B, shall take the semester exam.

4. Excused absences shall include: a doctor's note for any illness, being sent home from school with fever or vomiting, a doctor's note for appointments including but not limited to dentist, orthodontist, optometrist, general physician, any specialty doctor, therapy appointments, dermatology.
