Recently,  the administration at Stepasnki Early Childhood Center has made the decision to cancel the 2018-2019 morning sessions of the First Families program designed for children aged 0-3, as well as  the once-a-week Jump Start 3 year old preschool program (both taught by Monica Hungerford).  Both of these programs were designed to fill a need brought forth by the community.  The need for these programs has steadily risen over the years and there's consistently a long waiting list to get into these programs.  The explanation given by the administration for cutting these programs was to offer two additional 3 year old preschool classes.  Although we understand the importance of 3 year old preschool classes, we do not understand why they need to replace the programming already running very successfully.

The teacher of these programs, Monica Hungerford, has prided herself in the development of these programs and has become a 'Waterford Legend' through her reputation as an absolutely amazing teacher, person and advocate of the Waterford School District.  Although she tried endlessly to negotiate and offer other alternatives for these cuts, the administration has not budged or thought of any other plans on how to keep the programming.  Therefore, Monica Hungerford has made the heart wrenching decision to leave her beloved position of 27 years.  We demand that the administration rethink their decision and come up with alternative plans and/or resources to keep the programs for the upcoming school year; and ultimately keep Monica Hungerford as a much need teacher in the Waterford School District!   Her worth goes far beyond any dollar amount.

Some further background information on Monica Hungerford:

For the past 27 years Monica Hungerford has devoted her life as a preschool teacher at Stepanski Early Childhood Center.  She has touched the lives of thousands of families in ways that can't be expressed on paper.  She's truly given a piece of her heart to each child she has taught and has left a lasting impression on every family she has come into contact with.  The love, compassion, and tenderness she provides to the children helps to instill a love for school, for learning and prepares her students, at an early age, school readiness.  In addition to being an absolutely amazing teacher with her students and families, she is also an integral part of not only Stepanski but also Waterford schools.  She is a huge advocate for Waterford schools and volunteers countless hours of her time to the making the Stepanski PTO one of the absolute best.  She helps plan and attends all fundraising events outside of school hours for Stepanski and besides donating her time she also donates her own money to families that could not normally afford preschool classes.  She truly gives all she has to make this community and especially Waterford Schools a better place.  To say she is one of a kind and irreplaceable would be an understatement and it is truly heart breaking to see the lack of support being offered to her by the administration.
