Improve mental health resources on college and university campuses

Every two hours someone between the ages of 15-24 will commit suicide, almost half are college students. As a college student these numbers scare me.

It’s a well known fact that college is a stressful time for many young adults. Students face peer pressure, academic pressure, and financial hardship. These obstacles and moments of high stress have a great impact on the mental health of an individual.

Congress found that about ten percent more students are suffering from depression  and anxiety in the last decade than any other time. There is little done for the mental health community on college campuses, and most of those suffering have not felt comfortable enough to seek help. With more accessible resources, and proper training to those involved in the campus community, the conditions of these individuals lives could be improved drastically. For this reason I urge you to help me get the bill H.R. 4374 Mental Health on Campus Improvement Act passed.

If this bill is passed grants will be distributed to eligible institutes of higher education to provide mental health services and training to students and staff on mental health awareness, as well as early intervention techniques. The distribution of these grants will not only improve the quality of life for those involved in higher education, the funding will also be used to educate the outside community in order to reduce the stigma around mental health.
