Dear Violet, Kevin, Astrid, Yvette, Georgie, Maja, Cleon, Adam, Chandrika, Sabia and Oran,
We have launched this petition to bring together the parent, staff and community voices who have been saying for many months and still say today - NO to Keir Hardie School becoming an academy.
A majority of us Keir Hardie parents, the teachers and staff too, have said that we want our school to remain a community school. But we don't feel we are being listened to.
The majority of Governors including the Head Teacher Ms Otieno have said NO to our request for a binding yes/no staff and parent ballot over whether Keir Hardie should be academised. We believe in democracy and that the fate of the school should not be left to 11 individuals. Especially on something as important and irreversible as becoming an academy.
Newham Council have recently passed a motion which ends support for any academisation in the borough. This was won through pressure by union groups at Avenue, Cumberland and Keir Hardie, and parents at many schools across Newham. The Council now have a policy that any school wishing to academise should hold binding staff and parent ballots.
We support our teachers and staff in the National Education Union at Keir Hardie in their strike action to save our school. Our teachers do not want to strike but they also DO NOT want to join an academy.
We want the governing body to listen to staff and parents and NOT join a Multi-Academy Trust, neither Agate Momentum Trust or any other. There are alternatives to academies and these should be investigated thoroughly and without bias. This has not been the case so far. We believe that staff and parents need to have their say, by binding ballot.
Keir Hardie parents, staff, community and supporters, please sign our petition to SAVE OUR SCHOOL.
These are the individuals who have the fate of our children's education in their hands. We are appealing to them to do the right and democratic thing and keep Keir Hardie as a community school accountable to parents, staff and the community.
