They have made the decision to shut down the Orchestra program for Sterling High school and Lee High school in Baytown Tx. They are only going to offer the Orchestra program at GCM High School forcing many students to have to choose between their academics or staying in orchestra. That means kids will have to chose between STEM, Swimming, Soccer, Health and Science, IMPACT and Stuart Career Tech students are also affected. There are at least 5 students this year who have waited through Freshman year to join orchestra again and I'm sure others. They are claiming That Sterling and Lee do not have the numbers to support a full time teacher. From my understanding, they do have the numbers and GCM doesn't. Not to mention the huge impact it'll have on our kids! a new bond is to come in and instead of making it easier on the kids they are forcing them to have to choose when there is no need they can do it all if they choose to. This idea sounds like the idea of a mega school, which no one in the district wants, but they are still trying to push. The city does not want a mega orchestra either. Each school is capable of having their own orchestra and band. Also, The ones having to switch to GCM will not get to graduate or go to school with their class that they have been with, most of them, their whole lives and the others will have to be bussed from one school to another, Just for orchestra, daily. So many are being forced to give up things they wouldn't have to if the program stays with Sterling and Lee. Please ban together with us to stop this from happening.
