Why this petition matters

Started by Rob Korotky

Wright Street Park, in the Green Mountain Area of Lakewood Colorado, is about to be re-developed by the city and a third party company.  Currently it is a city park with natural plant life indigenous to the area, a dirt path around the perimeter and a small children's playground on the north end.

Whereas most home owners & residents surrounding the park are in favor of upgrades to the playground area and running track, we are opposed to the park losing its natural environment, or Open Space, look and feel.  All 3 proposals presented to the public in June of 2022 showed plans to completely over-run what is otherwise a natural Open Space Park as it currently stands. This is not what residents want.

A Park within A Park -  We are therefore petitioning the City of Lakewood and the Developers to redevelop the Wright Street Park within a couple of parameters:

1)  Keep It Mostly Open Space - Roughly 75% of the Wright Street Park to remain natural open space as it currently stands.

2)  Build a Park Within A Park - Develop the new playground, maintained grass areas (with trees), and any new amenities at the North end of the Park along Wright Street itself (generally in the area of the current playground... see map). This is not just for the sake of maintaining most of the park as Open Space, but also to centralize activities away from condos and apartments surrounding Wright Street Park. Such a "Park Within A Park" would allow for the development of a good sized activity area with all the proposed amenities, while maintaining Natural Areas around the perimeter nearest the existing dwellings.
