Keep Windsor animal control in Windsor

The City of Windsor is considering moving Animal Control to Lakeshore in an effort to save money. This will result in a MASSIVE DOWNSIZING of the Animal Care and Control services offered to the residents of Windsor.
Lakeshore does not have the facilities or staff to provide services comparable to what Windsor residents are currently receiving.
Lakeshore contract will NOT include cats. This will be a devastating setback for cats in our community. Residents who have lost a cat will no longer have a central location to look for them. Caring people will no longer be able to bring in stray cats which may result in them considering alternatives such as dropping them off in rural communities or even poisoning or killing them. Windsor would be one of the few large cities in Ontario not providing shelter services for cats.
Lakeshore pound is a minimum 20 minute drive which will make it challenging for people to drop off stray dogs. (In 2015 almost half of Windsor's stray dogs were dropped off by caring people) Windsor residents may not want or be able to drive to Lakeshore resulting in stray dogs roaming the streets of our community.
Lakeshore pound is open only 5 hours per day 5 days a week. This combined with the distance will make it difficult for Windsor residents to look for and/or claim their lost pets.
Lakeshore can accommodate only a small number of dogs and does not have an adoption program. Dogs are currently held for 3 days, after which St. Clair College has first right of refusal to take unclaimed dogs for use in their Veterinary Technician Program.
Residents of the City of Windsor deserve better.
Budget talks are currently underway and the current contract with Windsor Essex County Humane Society expires June 17, 2017 so time is of the essence. Please sign to keep Animal Control for Windsor in Windsor.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Windsor City Council do what is best for Windsor and renew their contract for animal control services with The Windsor Essex Humane Society.
