Keep TJ option for Loudoun Children

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST or short name TJ) is a Virginia state-chartered magnet school. Ranked as one of the top high schools in USA by many organizations. It is a public school operated by Fairfax County Public Schools but admits students from Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington and Prince William Counties and from the city of Falls Church. Because of its reputation, TJHSST goes through a competitive admission process, similar to very selective colleges.

Loudoun is entitled for 105-110 seats in TJ but around 80+ students get selected every year to TJ.  Loudoun students on average commutes 3 hours/day but are still willing to goto this competitive school to pursue their dreams.

Loudoun county opened Academies of Loudoun (ACL) in Fall 2018. ACL is not exactly to replicate TJ, but to provide challenging science and tech courses in separate streams. Some members of school board thinks that ACL can substitute TJ, but it is going to take some time to catch-up. By withdrawing from TJ, we will have less opportunities for kids.

With rapidly increasing population in Loudoun, we need more opportunities for our kids and keeping TJ option certainly helps apart from increasing number of seats in ACL.

This petition is to request LCPS board members to consider keeping TJHSST option for Loudoun county children

1) Provide additional school choice for gifted and talented kids of Loudoun.

2) Provide additional science and technology high school opportunity for rapidly growing Loudoun population

3) Keep TJ option to attract incoming tech families to Northern Virginia (many big corporations are considering moving into our area).
