Keep the start of the new school year the day after Labor Day

The calendar committee of SCPS Schools is considering a pre-Labor Day start to the 2018-2019 school year. The SCPS Schools currently go by the "Kings Dominion Law," the Kings Dominion Law states that: the state of Virginia prohibits city and county school districts from starting class before Labor Day, thanks to the law designed to give an extra week’s worth of busy crowds. The law also allows the workers, many of whom are high school students from Virginia to be able to work the extra week before the park shuts down on the weekdays. Current Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe states in an interview with the Washingtonian that he does not support going to school before Labor Day. With an extra week, Virginia's economy is proven to be higher during the week before Labor Day due to Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens staying open and students going and enjoying the parks.
The proposed idea would be starting a week or two before Labor Day. Summer vacation would start end of May or the start of June.
Fall Sports and after school activities would have to start their seasons a week or two earlier due to the prep time needed before school. The sports already start early August and pushing school to be a week earlier would force coaches to start their season at the end of July. Coaches and athletes would rather be relaxing and spending time with their families before they must start the tryouts and practices.
Families are still on vacations during the week before Labor Day as they try to make a last-ditch effort at trying to make their summer a good one. The freshmen orientations are always the week before the first day of school and some of freshmen and their parents don't show up since it's during their vacation and it's during their summer break! Putting the start of school in August would cause even more students to miss their orientation. The fact that this even being considered to interfere with family vacations is outrageous! SCPS encourages spending time with family and they could potentially take spending time with students’ families away.
Please join me in petitioning the calendar committee and their recommendation to the School Board! Students, parents, and SCPS staff your voice will be heard!
