Why this petition matters

Started by Chiara Garcia

The town of Wiggins is suffering a water shortage.

On July 27th, the shortage has led to a motion agreed amongst the Town Council, & will raise our water rates without the community having a voice against the inflation. The residential water bills will increase by \$17.00 for the winter months, and a prorated increase based on the volume of gallons used in the summer months. Below are the rates that were voted on by the Town of Wiggins Board members:

The calculation below is estimated on 54,000 gallons for one month:

Water delivered in excess of 1,000 gallons in a month shall be assessed an additional usage charge in accordance with the following table: Residential and Commercial Water

Users 0 to 1,000 gallons \$71.50 minimum (No usage charge)  =       \$71.50

1,001 to 4,000 gallons \$ 3.25 per thousand gallons                   =       \$13.00

4,001 to 8,000 gallons \$ 3.75 per thousand gallons                  =        \$15.00

8,001 to 15,000 gallons \$ 4.25 per thousand gallons               =         \$29.75

15,001 to 25,000 gallons \$ 4.75 per thousand gallons            =          \$47.50

25,001 to 50,000 gallons \$ 5.25 per thousand gallons            =        \$131.25

50,001 to 100,000 gallons \$ 5.75 per thousand gallons         =           \$23.00

100,001 gallons and above \$ 6.25 per thousand gallons                     \$ 0.00

Total Water Bill     \$ 331.00

Last Month            \$ 242.30

Increase               \$   88.70

We will also see an increase of \$10.00 on the base sewer rates and \$2 per 1,000 gallons used.

Sewer rates on my bill are based at 6,000 gallons.

Sewer Rate Increase

Base Rate: \$ 40.00 per month from \$30.00/month                                                                                       \$40.00

User Charge: \$ 2.00 per thousand gallons of water*                           \$10.00

Total Sewer Bill         \$50.00

Previous Month        \$30.00

Increase                 \$20.00

Total Increase =           \$  88.70

\$  20.00

\$108.70

We as a community have a chance to speak our voices and ask the council for more options and explanations! There is currently a USDA grant under the “Water & Waste loan & Grant program for Rural Development” that is open to the public for information. If the town of Wiggins was granted such loan as this, it will provide up to 75% coverage to provide clean water/wastewater. It will be a 40-year fixed interest rate, based on medium income areas. If we see an increase in water we could be looking like a brown town, with lots of weeds!  Residents will be watering less, if that is the case. Our water bills are not effective and has been confirmed by town of Wiggins employees as well. Residential meters are “averaged” and you are not actually charged for what is being used but charged based on an average.

If we do not speak up about this issue, we will face the inflation without having a voice.
There are solutions to the problems the town of Wiggins is facing! We need to be informed and involved. What we need for the community, is what is most beneficial and cost effective for our future.
