Keep the Chesapeake Bay's Back River Water Clean

Keep the Chesapeake Bay's Back River Water Clean
Fresh, clean water is essential for life. We use it every day, to drink, shower, wash dishes, recreation, and hundreds of other things.
If you live in Maryland, you've likely heard of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. All bodies of water have a watershed, which is an area where water flows to that body of water. In the Chesapeake Bay, there is a large river that comes off called the Back River. The Back River watershed area contains many parks and fishing areas that are used every single day by Maryland citizens.
So, why is this relevant? Well, the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was recently put under the direction of the Maryland Environmental Service. This was issued by MD Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles after Baltimore City failed to comply with a previous order from Grumbles about illegal discharges of polluted water at the WWTP. According to an inspection conducted not much earlier, the Maryland Department of the Environment said it "revealed the precipitous decline of the functioning of several critical processes at the Plant in comparison with prior inspections.” This could have major effects on the health of the public.
The Maryland Department of Health issued the following instructions and regulations on April 19, 2022:
- Avoid contact with Back River Water
- Do not drink stream water
- Do not swim or wade in the water
- Always wash your hands with soap and water before eating
- If you accidentally touch the water, wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible
- If you have open wounds or sores that come in contact with Back River water, contact your healthcare provider
Considering that they had to release these, does it not make it absolutely essential that something is done? The MD Department of Health clearly knows citizens could be hurt by coming in contact with the water in the Back River. If action is not taken immediately, citizens who are not aware of the state of the Back River water could become very sick. Please help encourage the Maryland Environmental Service to do something about this by signing!!!
