Keep Telederm funded: #SaveTelederm

An innovative program that overcomes the tyranny of distance to provide high quality specialist skin cancer and dermatology treatment in rural and regional Australia is in danger of being shut down when funding runs out in July 2013. We need your help to convince the Federal Health Minister to maintain funding beyond the end of the financial year to ensure continued access to this invaluable service for all rural and remote Australians.

The melanoma incidence rates among men and women in rural Australia are more than one third higher than for those in urban areas. However due to a severe shortage of rural dermatologists, any referral from a GP can require patients to travel hundreds (or thousands) of kilometeres to their nearest urban center for treatment.

The current Telederm system facilitated by ACRRM and delivered by Brisbane based dermatologist Dr Jim Muir has been running successfully for 9 years, overcoming the tyranny of distance to provide high quality diagnostic consultations via the internet. The program also delivers invaluable training to rural GPs so that they can aid in diagnosis and deliver appropriate treatment to their patients across outback Australia.

Unfortunately the funding for this service is at risk beyond June 2013 and ACRRM is waiting to hear back from the Department of Health and Ageing about a submission to continue funding Telederm. Please sign this position, spread the word on Twitter (#SaveTelederm) to help us ensure that the Federal Health Minister continues to fund this invaluable service for all rural and remote Australians.

Benefits of the Telederm program:

Provides high quality free advice on diagnosis and management of tricky skin conditions for rural GPs

Saves countless hours and lost wages for rural patients by eliminating the need to travel to a major urban center for treatment.

Increased speed of diagnosis and treatment for patients

Increases the services that rural and remote GPs can provide to their communities
