Lucy Harman started this petition to Southampton Music Service and

Keep SYCS on Friday to benefit the Orchestra's success.

We, the players of SYCS have taken it upon ourselves to set up this petition to voice our disagreement with the change and try to reinstate the timetable back to its original time.

More information:

Recently an email was sent out on behalf of the Southampton Music Service declaring their change in Timetable and Location for SYCS' rehearsal times. The email stated that their reason for change was because 'SYO’s current rehearsal time is also highly restrictive and the commitments of students who enter SYO frequently have to be juggled between other sporting activities, Saturday jobs etc.' We believe that the reason for SYCS’ success in recent years in comparison to SYO, is not a result of the time at which we practice, but instead, the music we play, the conductors we have the pleasure of being with, and the social family we have bonded together. As the largest and most successful orchestra in the Pyramid, the lack of consideration and warning to this drastic change has deeply saddened us. We understand and acknowledge that SYO is the top of the Southampton orchestra tier, hence why they are priority, however, without SYCS, there is no SYO. Respectfully, we do not see how this change shall benefit both SYO and SYCS, and from SYCS’ recent success and popularity, we presumed it would be in the music service’s best interest to continue that and not tarnish SYCS as a result of the improvement of SYO.

Fridays work perfectly for SYCS as we have a range of ages. Being on a Friday is lucky for the younger children because it means they can have a later night as it isn’t a school night, meaning more rehearsal time, meaning better playing, hence resulting in more moving up to SYO, which is the Southampton Music Services intended need currently. It also benefits the players who are in later secondary school and college as it means they aren’t in the middle of a stressful week and therefore will be more willing to play and try harder. Wednesday however would create many problems for people of the ages 15-18 as they have such an extensive amount of your work to do as the exams are getting harder by the second. It is proven that doing an activity the night before an exam that isn't revision, is likely to jeopardize your grade, therefore having SYCS on a Wednesday would result in a much lower attendance as many will want to stay home to revise, and it is likely that parents will not want their children to miss out on a night of revision before an exam also. This will result in a lower level of playing in the orchestra, and therefore will not benefit SYO whatsoever, as it shall mean that SYCS players haven't reached the level needed for SYO. Afterall, this is an extracurricular activity for children, the aim is for them to enhance their skills and have fun, we do understand that SYO is of a higher standard and therefore will have less leeway for amusement in rehearsals, but perhaps that is why less people want to move up to SYO.

Why have we set up a Petition:

Many parents have emailed their concerns and have been met with very similar replies that are not satisfactory. In addition to this, many of us SYCS players have taken it upon ourselves to send very heartfelt and long thought out emails and have all be sent the same reply stating that as it’s the summer holidays they cannot do anything about this. We find this greatly disrespectful that they would make such a huge change at a time that they know they have no obligation to have to reply to any concerns, especially from their own players.

Seeing as none of our efforts to voice our concerns have been taken seriously so far, we have set up this petition to demonstrate the scale of disagreement.

If you agree with any of these points, please sign this petition and help SYCS gain the respect they deserve. Thank You.
