Our group is deeply concerned about the Roseway Manor Long Term Care facility going for-profit in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.  Our Manor has been voted to be given to a for profit corporation by the Municipality of Shelburne council, the Town of Shelburne Council and the Town of Lockeport Council. Please contact your councilor or all councilors if you are concerned.  None of the councils have met with staff, residents/family members or this group.  We believe open consultation with the public is the only way forward.  The power to change this back to non profit lies in the hands of the councilors.  This petition will be presented to all councilors in upcoming council meetings.

For-profit means there will no longer be a community board or community input. After 46 years, we will lose our community voice inside the building.  Should there be any concerns by residents or staff, they will run into the bureaucracy of a large corporation and will likely be given a phone number to voice their complaint to someone who has never seen Shelburne and couldn't find it on a map.  The community connection can only remain if the board remains.

What does for profit mean for services?  This means that surplus funds will no longer go to the 66 vulnerable residents.  Surplus funds will be put into the pockets of shareholders.  This could mean up to a 9.1% budget reallocation to shareholders.  This is a no win situation for residents and staff at any facility. Ontario and British Columbia have overwhelming evidence that this can have horrendous consequences and residents receive inferior care in many cases.  There have been far more covid deaths in for profit long term care facilities across Canada. Dr. Pat Armstrong is an expert in long term care homes and is adamantly against for profit care.

Another issue is that it will result in automatic job loss.  For more information please join our facebook group "Keep Roseway Manor Community Based" and read the article The Problems With For Profit Long Term Care Article
