The treasured site which dates back to the 1800s, has been a riding school for many years and was run by Julia for the past 37 years. Ridgway Stables always aimed at being an affordable place to ride and a place of learning for children. The lease could not be renewed, as the private landlord would not consent to it and therefore Ridgway Stables closed in September 2017 and the horses and ponies were re-homed.
The closure of Ridgway Stables riding school is a huge loss to the local community and South West London. Horses and ponies are a unique feature of the Village and Wimbledon common. This facility not only provided access to horse riding at a more reasonable cost than other local providers, it was the only place in the Village children could learn to ride. It provided support to various programmes during the school holidays such as Merton Active and Camp Beaumont in addition to running the Saturday Club year round.
We have had a supportive response from Councillor Stephen Alambritis. Show your support by signing so that Merton Council can see that the community do not want this site redeveloped or its use changed from a riding school. We want to keep this riding facility accessible to all!
