Keep Porn Off of the Children's Computers in the Library!

When I walked into the library with my children in January, the last thing I expected to see was hardcore pornography on a computer in the children's section.

I can't tell you how shocked I was to find that, due to the library's "Electronic Intellectual Freedom" policy, NO web filters are installed on any of their computers, not even in the children's section! While ultimately it is a parent's responsibility to know and limit what a child accesses online, children are left unsupervised to browse the web on library computers every day.  I think the library, as a public institution, has an obligation to take basic steps to protect our children from dangerous and explicit material like pornography!

Over the past four months I've communicated and worked with the Library Board and attended their board meetings to get them to implement web filtering in the children’s section.  The pros and cons of different web filters were discussed by various people.  The Board members heard heartbreaking testimonials from other members of the community about the negative effects pornography has on children and how it destroys their innocence.  Many Cedar Falls citizens, especially parents, expressed how they simply had expected the library to have filters, especially on the children's computers and how this knowledge made this beloved place feel unsafe for their children. Some even stopped coming to the library because they don’t want the risk of having their kids exposed to porn.

I don’t fully understand why it has taken this long for such a “common sense” matter to be addressed, but in the upcoming Library Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees will finally be voting on whether there should be pornography web filters on the children’s section computers

If this is important or of concern to you, please join me by signging this petition and telling the Library Board:

“We want the Cedar Falls Library's children's section to be a PORN FREE place.
We want the Board of Trustees to do everything in their power to make this area designated for children, safe for children to come and explore."

If you want to give even more support to this case, consider attending the upcoming Library Board Meeting yourself! Wednesday, June 6th at 4pm, conference room in the Cedar Falls Public Library, 524 Main Street, Cedar Falls, IA 50613.

Please spread the word to neighbors and friends in Cedar Falls!

Thank You!
