Dear Rutherford County School Board,

We, the communities off Rucker Lane and Highway 96, would like to first thank you for your dedicated service to the students of Rutherford County. We have outstanding schools in this county that we are proud to be part of. You have a difficult task determining which students will make up the new student body of Rockvale High School and how to relieve the overcrowding at other schools. Thank you for the time and effort you have spent on this challenging topic.

Under the proposed new zoning, our homes off the Highway 96 end of Rucker Lane would be zoned Rockvale High School instead of Blackman High School. We would like to respectfully ask you to consider a change to the proposed south border of the Blackman High School zoning area. We respectfully ask that our communities off the highway 96 end of Rucker Lane remain zoned for Blackman Middle School and Blackman High School.

While the majority of the 1100 students that are being rezoned to Rockvale High School from Blackman High School actually attended Rockvale Middle School, there is a very small area of the new Rockvale High Zoning area that is zoned Blackman Middle School. This means there are students who spent their middle school years at Blackman Middle, developing the Blackman spirit and who thought they would attend Blackman High, who are now zoned for Rockvale High. For those of us that live in the Blackman community off of Rucker Lane, our children will now be zoned Rockvale Elementary, Blackman Middle and then Rockvale High School. The middle school years are so important to our children as they begin exploring who they are and building the foundations of their friendships, and this plan is very disruptive to these children both academically and socially. We feel that it is important that our children go to high school with the same friends and teammates that they have spent their middle school years with, and, continue the tradition and values of the Blackman school system.

As you are aware, school systems are very important when families are selecting their residence, so many people chose their current home based on zoning for Blackman Middle and High Schools. Whether it was a continued family tradition or chosen for academic, athletic or other purpose, there was intent for many of these children to attend Blackman High School. Additionally, we are concerned with our children who are young drivers and their safety on Rucker Lane. It is a narrow road that is surrounded by cornfields and has seen multiple wrecks especially going in the direction our children would travel to Rockvale High School. Rucker Lane is also scheduled for improvements that will include widening and the additions of sidewalks. This will mean our students fight construction on Rucker Lane and then also on Highway 99 on their commute to school if zoned to Rockvale High School.

We are enclosing the middle school zoning map and ask that you thoughtfully consider amending the proposed south border of the Blackman High School area to duplicate the Blackman Middle School zone.

Respectfully submitted,

The communities off Rucker Lane and Highway 96
