Why this petition matters

Started by Olivia Pedigo

IUPUI's O'Neil School wants to combine the procedural criminal law class with the substantive criminal law class. The problem with this is they are two completely different classes. Substantive criminal law class defines what the law says while procedural law is about the procedures used to enforce the law. Substantive criminal law class benefits ALL students regardless of what their major is. Procedural criminal law class only benefits future law enforcement officials. These two 16 week courses can't be combined together into one 16 week course without loosing vital lessons and materials that are currently covered through having two different classes.  By combining the classes the future law enforcement personnel will have a weaker foundation prior to joining the force which could release in unnecessary casualties once on the job.  Students who aren't interested in going to work as law enforcement will struggle to pay attention and retain the information as a result more students will fail the class. This will effect not only the students in O'Neil but the greater Indianapolis area.
