Highlife Highland is proposing to move the public library from its High Street location to the proposed new Academy campus on Duncan Drive.

We believe that this move would be detrimental to the community of Nairn for many reasons:

  • The town centre location is easily accessible on foot from many parts of Nairn
  • The town centre location is easily accessible by bus or car, with parking spaces on the High Street and in the car parks at the back of the library
  • Many people drop in to the library when visiting other businesses in the High Street - many will stop using the library if it is moved to a less accessible location out of the town centre
  • The central location of the library provides access not only to books, magazines and newspapers, but also many other resources for the community, such as:
o   access to computers, photocopying and laminating
    o   free one-to-one computing tuition
    o   free wifi
o   a meeting place for many community groups, for example: book club, Gaelic conversation group, children’s lego sessions, and Book Bug sessions
  • In its current location, the library is a useful and easily found resource for visitors to the town
  • The library plays a vital part in keeping our High Street vibrant - moving it out of the town centre will result in a reduced footfall for shops, cafes and other businesses on the High Street

We call on John West, Director of Culture & Learning at Highlife Highland, and Margaret Davidson, Leader of Highland Council, to please leave Nairn Library at the heart of our community - in the centre of town!
