Anna ISD is removing Mr. Daniel Rohovit from his position as the high school choir director and gave him a decision to move to a non-music related position within the school district. Mr. Rohovit has built this choir program from the ground up and the love he has for the students and their growth within the program is amazing. The pain that this decision has caused to students has been immense as he has been working hard the last 5-6 years for this program.

The reason for his removal of the program was that the choir was not "progressing enough". Prior to this being in discussion, Mr. Rohovit was not made aware of performance issues in previous evaluations. For those who are unaware, four years ago the choir consisted of 20-30 students. Now, there are over 60 students who currently are participating in choir. As for rankings and scores, four years ago the choir scored 4s and 5s (ranks 1-5 from best to worst) in UIL. This year, the choir did an amazing job and scored more 1s than they ever have in the program and managed to bring home some awards/trophies as well! In addition to UIL, Mr. Rohovit has made it a priority to have students experience music through a different source as well: barbershop. Doing this, he has made it possible for students to travel to California, Tennessee, and Florida for a national convention called the “Midwinter Convention” through the Barbershop Harmony Society. At these conventions, the choir performs and are given ratings. Ratings go from “Good”, “Excellent”, “Outstanding” and “Superior”. Four years ago, the choir was given a rating of “Good”. This year, the choir was given  a rating of “Outstanding”, three points away from the best rating “Superior”. 

As a former Anna ISD student who participated in Mr. Rohovit's choir for my entire high school career, he was always the person to lift our spirits up regardless of the situation. He managed to be a teacher, a choir director, and a supporter all in one to each and every student. He always managed to go out of his way to help his students in the best way that he can. Mr. Rohovit created an environment within the classroom that was always so fun and inclusive and made it a priority to make everybody feel comfortable and included. He made the choir program a safe space for students of all different backgrounds; he also built the choir program as a family surrounded by support and love. 

Though the decision has been made final, we are hoping that this petition will make it to where the Superintendent, Michael Comeaux and the school board will reconsider their decision and will keep Mr. Daniel Rohovit in his position as the Anna High School choir director.
