Please help support this petition in the fight to keep Mandarin at Skyline. Skyline High School is known for its student cultural diversity. However, plans of eliminating Mandarin, one of the most rarely offered world language courses, endangers the cultural community.
After this year (2017-2018), Mandarin classes will no longer be available at Skyline High School for students to take. Anyone who plans to attend Skyline will only be offered two world language courses: French and Spanish. As a current student learning Mandarin at Skyline, I want to keep Mandarin as an option for current and future students. It is a major skill for students to have, especially in the already highly competitive working and global community in which bi-literacy is much needed.
According to the official Skyline High School website itself, “The Mission of Skyline High School is to provide all students with a supportive environment and rigorous curriculum through which they develop their academic skills, creative talents, and civic values.” Despite such promise, Mandarin (a course that fulfills this mission) is has been taken away. Even in this past school year, many of my friends who actually wanted to take Mandarin were forced into taking Spanish and French instead because the school took the entire Mandarin course (all levels) out from the course request form. Hence, they were not able to sign up for any Mandarin classes. As a result of such situation, the administration assumed that since a small number of students signed up for Mandarin, comparing to other languages, that it wouldn’t be beneficial to offer the course. Such decision making, which is totally inconsiderate of current and future students who want to take Mandarin, is an inequity in itself.
Aren't high schools suppose to support students who want to take challenging and beneficial courses and better prepare students for their future? Please help support this petition in the fight to keep Mandarin at Skyline High School by signing.
