Keep Indiana solar affordable by saying NO to Senate Bill 309

The Problem: Senate Bill 309 seeks to increase the lifetime cost of home solar installations and transfer those benefits to the utility company.
Currently, Indiana is a net metering state. This means that residents with solar installations can use the power they produce to credit their energy bills and avoid high cost electricity. Any power produced, that is not used, is pushed into the grid and purchased by the utility.
SB309 seeks to eliminate net metering and reduce the purchase price given to solar homes. Net metering would be replaced by a “buy all, sell all” program. This means that consumers would be forced to sell all the solar power they produce at a cut rate (-72% of current net metering rates) and would have to continue buying power from the utility, despite producing it on their own system.
According to Greentech Media (the leading solar market research firm,) Indiana is projected to see the highest percentage gains in residential solar installations in the US for 2017. (166% increase from 2016, GTM US Solar Market Insight Q4 2016)
This massive jump would not only increase Indiana's energy independence, but would also stimulate job growth in the state. Employing over 206,000 workers nationwide, solar jobs have already surpassed oil, gas and coal extraction (International Renewable Energy Agency, US Bureau of Statistics.) Not only is total employment up, but the solar industry is a top employer of our nations veterans.
If SB309 is allowed to pass, energy independence and job growth in the market would come to a halt. Essentially, the utility company would be in complete control over family owned rooftop installations.
A similar bill in Florida was defeated in 2016 when citizens took notice of the utility company attempting to sneak the bill past them using vague language. Thankfully, the bill was noticed and public outcry derailed the utility’s attempt to seize control of citizens just trying to produce their own clean electricity.
