Keep Horace Mann Elementary Open!

Keep Horace Mann Elementary Open!
Why this petition matters
The Oakland Unified School District Board of Education has targeted Horace Mann Elementary School to be closed, along with multiple other schools serving predominantly Black and Brown low-income communities. Horace Mann is a beautifully diverse school, serving Latino, Black, Asian, Native American/Indigenous, Pacific Islander, Arabic, and white students.
Our children love their school and the principal, teachers, and staff there. They have access to the weekly student of the week assemblies, tutoring, music, art, library, garden club, Destiny Arts dance class, robotics club, Upward Roots, student council and much more! Every day our children receive access to restorative justice, clinical intervention specialist services, Positive Behavior and Supports, Toolbox social-emotional skills, and the Girls Inc. After School program.
If our school is closed, then our students, who are a majority walking population, will have to choose between attending:
-Bridges Academy, 0.6 miles away/14-minute walk
-Allendale, 1.4 miles away/30-minute walk across a major street
-Global Family, 1 mile away/22-minute walk across a major street
There is LITERALLY no place our kids could walk to school without crossing a major street in East Oakland where cars have been known to KILL children and their families.
Keep Horace Mann Elementary and all Oakland public schools open!
