Keep Farquhar Middle School Students Local

MCPS has been meeting with parents of future Farquhar Middle School students to incorporate their ideas and concerns into a new building design. Construction is currently scheduled for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years.

One of the modernization plans that MCPS project representatives consider very feasible would require students to be bused to the Tilden Holding Center in Rockville for two entire school years.

MCPS estimates that travel time for students will be approximately 1 hour to 1hour and 10 minutes, each way. The commute could be even longer than that for families who live further, and for everyone during inclement weather or heavy traffic.

This would require, for two long years:

·          Children to wake up much earlier than they currently do to make the bus, and have limited after-school time for homework and extracurricular activities

·          Children to endure a long, practically unsupervised bus ride, inviting bullying, mischief and impacting their academic performance

·          Parents to drive an unacceptably long distance for emergencies, after school activities, and school meetings (at great cost in gas and time)

·          Teachers to extend their commutes, some drastically, with the result of losing some of the great teachers, who will change schools

These are just some of the compelling reasons to modernize Farquhar Middle School on-site, leaving the old building open while the new one is built on the existing grounds. Signatories to this petition are against moving Farquhar Middle School students to the Tilden Holding Center for two years.

We ask that MCPS work to develop feasible, cost effective building development options that will leave our children in the community, or delay the project until a feasible Holding School option is available. The well being of our students, the parents, the staff, and the entire community are at stake, and options that will remove the students from the community for two years are simply unacceptable.
