Keep cyclists safe! Call on Durham University to include cycling routes in its Masterplan

The Durham University Masterplan promised to create new routes for cycling to the university, but now it seems there will be nothing. Students and staff need safe cycle routes to the university, and local people would also benefit. The University claims to be committed to promoting sustainable travel options, yet has repeatedly put off decisions about where cycle routes will go. The planning and design needs to be done now, or current students will never see any benefit, and the land needed for cycle routes might be built on.
We call on the University to work with the council and with cycling organisations, to design and deliver a safe cycling network. In particular this must cover journeys from the hill colleges to the main teaching buildings on South Road and New Elvet, and also cycling from the major areas of student houses.
In its Sustainable Travel Plan for 2014-2020, the University states it aims to increase the proportion of staff and students who regularly cycle or walk to the University, and work with local authorities to improve routes and safety for cyclists. Let's see these targets turned into action!
