The Poplar Bluff City Council has recently voted to move our city hall building from its current location in downtown to a new location off Barron road. The cost of this move would include purchase of the property and then renovation which has been estimated to cost upward of $9 million. The existing structural renovations are estimated to cost in the neighborhood of $4 million. The funds for the existing building renovation will be available in 12-18 months, where the funds to purchase and renovate the new property are not available. This means another loan being taken out by our city which means an inevitable raise in taxes.
This move will also mean that there is a possibility of less police coverage on the south and east sides of town. If the officer must transport in order to process or meet someone this will take them away from their sector leaving those areas unpatrolled until the officer can drive to the north side and back again.
We all work hard for our money, why do we need to give more to the city for a move that isn't necessary?
