Electric cars are key in Canada’s fight against climate change. Not only that, they save drivers thousands every year on fuel and maintenance costs.

In May, the federal government introduced a rebate for Canadians who buy electric vehicles: $5,000 for fully electric cars and $2,500 for plug-in hybrids. 

• A typical commuter can expect to save about $2,000 a year on fuel costs with an electric car, making driving one about 80% cheaper than a gas car.
• Over 80% of our country’s electricity grid is pollution-free. That makes electric cars especially clean in Canada. And because electric cars don’t produce tailpipe pollution, they improve air quality, which makes for healthier communities and lower healthcare costs. 
• 72% of Canadians now believe electric vehicles are bound to become the new norm, according to a poll by Abacus Data and Clean Energy Canada.
• Electric car rebates make a big difference. In the second quarter of 2019, electric car sales were up 150% in B.C. and 81% in Quebec over the previous year. Those two provinces have provincial rebates. In Ontario, where Doug Ford eliminated the provincial rebate, sales fell 58% compared to the previous year.

Canada needs to move faster in the fight against climate change. Electric cars will soon be the same price as gas cars—but we don’t have time to wait. And the benefits of buying an electric car now are numerous for Canadians and our climate. 

Unlike provincial rebates, the federal electric car rebate is available to all Canadians interested in making their next car electric. That’s only fair. In the fight against climate change, all Canadians want to do their part. Electric car rebates help them do so.

As the election looms, Canadians need to know where every federal party stands on electric cars. Will the rebates disappear as they did in Ontario under Doug Ford? Or will electric cars continue to be made affordable upfront, so that Canadians can save on fuel costs and shrink their carbon footprint?
