We the undersigned support Drs. Van Dussen and Hughes as they are valuable members of the university, gerontology and long-term care administration programs.  They add value to the transdisciplinary focus of the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services. The gerontology programs should be invested in through marketing support.  The aging population of the Mahoning Valley needs professionals with gerontology backgrounds to provide services and supports through the aging network. Without professors with gerontology and long-term care backgrounds, Youngstown State University will be unable to serve the needs of the nearly 30% of the population within its area.

This is especially relevant during the time of the pandemic when long term care employers are lacking employees with professional training to care of our vulnerable older adults in the community.  YSU has trained many professionals in gerontology and in long term care administration who are serving the community and this needs to continue.  Feedback from employers has been very positive as these trained professionals are sorely needed in our community.  YSU needs to continue to provide this pipeline of much-needed educated professionals in gerontology and, frankly, the pipeline needs to continue to grow.  The older population is only going to continue grow and their families will continue to feel the need to seek care.

We are asking the university to keep the very important Gerontology and Long-Term Care programs and faculty. Already aligned with the University’s mission, both programs will continue to support the growing needs of our aging community and their families. Let’s keep and grow these critical programs.
