Why this petition matters

Started by Tammarious Scott

Civil Rights and Women´s suffrage are just two major significant periods of history that establish the necessary freedoms of large demographic groups today. As stated by the infamous philosopher, George Santayana,¨Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it¨. It is vital that we learn from our country's past in the mistakes that we made to mistreat others so we can continue to evolve past these barbaric practices and ideologies for a more peaceful and civilized society. The issue today is that some people can´t handle the truth of the past and want to try to wash it away. Hiding the history behind the pain that still affects those citizens today only and driving everyone against each other. The new bill SB. 3 that was passed in November of 2021, if put into law, will change the curriculum of state schools to enforce teacher unbiased and informed discussion yet also restrict the teaching of parts of social studies such as civil rights and women’s suffrage. This will under-inform children of the state’s important historical context, especially in today’s world. This bill needs to be revised to not change the teachings of the curriculum and continue the teaching of these.
