Keep Adoption Discrimination Free

We are students at the University of Oklahoma and we have noticed a disturbing trend in the states surrounding us. A number of states have been passing bills that would allow for private child placement agencies to deny services based on religious and/or moral convictions while receiving state funds. These bills prioritize religious beliefs over the needs of a child. There is no reason for a child to be denied placement with a loving family because of the beliefs of one person or agency. The moral convictions clause is particularly concerning due to its ambiguity. Morals can cover just about anything. Members of the LGBT community, interracial couples, persons of color, single parents, the list of affected individuals can go on forever.
We propose a bill that states that any private adoption/child placement agency that receives state and/or federal funding can deny services based on religious doctrine only if it does not directly conflict with established anti-discrimination legislature. The US has over 100,000 children awaiting adoption and over 600,000 children in foster care. We will state again, there is no reason to deny a child placement in a warm and loving home just because of the beliefs of one person or one agency.
