In a world with 7 billion people who are all hungry and thirsty, we must make sure we use our sources of food and water equally and carefully. Rivers, a source of food and water, are getting polluted on a daily basis. People treat the rivers like they are trash cans. Plastic items haunt rivers in all sorts of forms such as bottles, bags, coffee cups, food packets and many more. Plastic takes 600 years to break down. When they do break down they release an excess amount of harmful chemicals which will kill fish and the people who drink the water. Plastic can also harm wildlife by clinging on to them or pretending to be their food. All in all plastic and pollution is killing rivers and the life in them in more ways than one.

A river in particular is the Manjira river. The river is located at Guakhadi Village in the Beed district. The river flows in from up North coming in from the Osmanabad district. It cuts through Bidar, Karnataka. It then runs through Telangana where it stops. It lasts 724 kilometers long with multiple tributaries including the Terna river, Manyad river, and the Lendi river. Morgi, a rural town, depends on the river for farming and sources of water. The Manjira has 2 dams supporting it, one dam is located at Medak district and the other is Nizam Sagar Dam located at Nizamabad.

The problem with the river is that it is getting heavily polluted. Many people are dumping their waste products into the river. This is killing the fish and making the water undrinkable and unusable for anything such as agriculture, cleaning, bathing, or usage for factories. The water in the river is getting covered by plastic which is slowing down the process of the rain cycle. The plastic slows down the first process of the rain cycle which is evaporation because the water can’t rise. This causes a downfall in rainfall. This can ruin crops and the function of little towns as they depend on rainfall for clean water. So It is important that we recognize our impact on the river as it slowly dying. Hopefully we can reverse the damage that his been done to the river and prevent it from ever dying again.
