Many older adults are abused everyday in Canada. Their abuse can be emotional, financial, physical and sexual. Emotional Abuse can be seen as neglecting the senior and their needs for care. Financial Abuse can be someone exploiting the senior without their knowledge. Physical Abuse can be hitting, kicking, punching, and/or grabbing the senior in a way that hurts them. Lastly, Sexual Abuse is undesired sexual behaviour that seniors fall victim to.
When seniors are put into nursing homes, their chances of abuse increases. Seniors in nursing homes are less likely to report abuse than seniors living in their own homes. In 2013, there were over 1,500 elder abuse cases across Canada, and those were only the seniors whom chose to speak up about their abuse, and Ontario had the highest amounts of reports.
In a CTV News report, 677 nurses working in nursing homes across Canada were involved in a survey regarding elder abuse where they were employed. The results showed that 38% of the nursing staff had witnessed a coworker abuse a resident in their care, and 80% said that that coworker was currently employed in the nursing home.
Nurses go through physical and mental strain. Many do not practice self-care. Nurses should have support groups in which they can release any built up emotions, and talk about their next steps. Protocol in nursing homes should require nursing staff to attend multiple workshops regarding elderly care, not have it as an open option. Assessments of the staff member should also be done weekly, and residents should be able to take anonymous surveys based on the nursing staff's performance.
It is extremely unfair and unjust to abuse a senior in a nursing home, solely because they are depending on the nursing staff to take care of them. Having negative impacts on seniors life only decreases their happiness, will to live, and quality of life.
