Annexation of Kenora, Ontario HEALTHCARE to Manitoba

Healthcare in Kenora, Ontario continues to be ignored by all politicians.  The people of Northwestern Ontario are an afterthought for our provincial government, headquartered in Toronto 2000 Km away.

Our regional capital is Winnipeg.  The capital of Manitoba is 2 hours away from Kenora.

Yet we are made to receive and coordinate care with Thunder Bay - 6 hours away in another time zone!

Would someone from southern Ontario accept this?  Would someone in Peteborough or Bracebridge complain if they were sent to Trois Riviere, Quebec for their health care instead of Toronto?  And if there was no specialist there, on to Halifax for further workup?

This is what happens with many patients in Kenora who find themselves having cardiac surgery or treatment for adolescent depression in hospitals in the GTA when resources in Thunder Bay are insufficient.

What 80-year-old wants to even try to get to Thunder Bay for their initial cancer evaluation for chemotherapy?  Do you know how many want to drive down the single-lane Transcanada hwy in winter, with the deer causing multiple accidents each day?  How many do you guess?!

And what is the cost to try to care for all these people in Ontario -- to transport patients, to plan to deliver care to all these people so remote from the rest of Ontario, (yet so close to Winnipeg)!?  At what cost to their families back home?

Do you own camp or cottage in the Kenora area, and you are from Manitoba? Is it easy to get healthcare here?  Have you had success in lobbying the Ontario government to improve the planning and resources?  Is there a summer walk-in clinic for seasonal residents?

WHY DOES KENORA CONTINUE TO BE PART OF ONTARIO‘S HEALTH PLANNING?  We are small, insignificant and forgotten by Toronto.

We need to be part of MANITOBA'S healthcare planning.  Kenora uses Manitoba doctors and Manitoba hospitals.  But Manitoba health services cannot plan to serve Kenora -- we are in the wrong province.  IT'S LONG PAST TIME TO CHANGE THIS!

MANITOBA AND ONTARIO SHALL DEVELOP A HEALTHCARE TREATY WHEREBY THE KENORA AREA IS ANNEXED TO THE PROVINCE OF MANITOBA FOR THE ORGANIZATION AND DELIVERY OF ALL HEALTHCARE SERVICES.
