Lowering The Speed Limit on Kareponia Hill

For many years local people at Kareponia (2km east of Awanui in the Far North on State Highway 10) have been concerned about the 100km/hour speed limit running through their community. Kareponia Hill is home to many families as well as two marae, a church, a Kohanga Reo and a home-based early childhood facility. Recently a young boy was hit by a car coming off the school bus, and - thankfully - survived. A week later, a head on collision at the bottom of the hill claimed a life. Speed was a factor in both accidents, as well as many others over the years. Loved pets have also been killed over the years. The community has had enough and is advocating strongly for a reduction of the speed limit on the Hill to 50km/hour.
