Kayla Nguyen started this petition to Kathleen Graupman and

American Sign Language, (ASL) is one of the most important languages in the community. Sign language is used all over the world. By removing the ASL program at Odyssey Academy due to funds or some other resentment issue, shows the audism towards the deaf and hard of hearing community. We as Odyssey Academy do not  condone the hatred towards the ASL community and by silencing the community condones the act of discrimination towards the privilege of learning ASL. It is not okay for the school to remove the program as it is important.  ASL has brought together a community of kids at Odyssey specifically 19 kids who took this class for 3 years together we became our own little family. Four kids in the class of 2023 alone planned on becoming interpreters or perusing ASL in college. Only 1,100 out of 26,727 high schools America offer ASL. Meaning a sorry 4% of all high schools. Which makes Odyssey rare. Why wouldn't Odyssey want to be rare? Just saying...By taking out every language options other than Spanish its removing our first amendment right of freedom of choice. Previously we had an IB program that would only benefit you if you took Spanish. Now that this program is no longer in our school, Spanish shouldn't be the only language promoted to students. Even Spanish students have expressed their dismay at the fact that the Spanish they've learned hasn't helped outside the classroom because it is Spanish from Spain which is vastly different from Spanish in other places. ASL is the 4th most used language in the U.S. Odyssey has done poorly in promoting the ASL program here. Even going as far as to tell ASL students to switch to Spanish because it would be "more beneficial' and that just goes to show the copious amount of privilege in the American Education system and how time and time again it fails those who aren't the idealized student. But more specifically the hearing privilege by insisting on only offering a single language class for an auditory language. Odyssey and the Greece Central School District is a place where they claim they're accepting and only want the best for their students and then do something that takes away a program that is seemingly mutually beneficial to all parties involved. So with this petition I hope you understand where we are coming from as students. And how our fundamental right to an education even something as minuscule as a language class, is being infringed upon.
