Isabella Folge started this petition to Monk's Walk School

"After losing the opportunity to have almost two years of hard work assessed by fair examination in spring/summer 2020, Year 13 pupils at Monks Walk Sixth Form have also recently lost another opportunity, a crucial milestone in their final year of mandatory education; Results Day."

Year 13 pupils in the UK have faced many adversities in regards to their education this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many opportunities, vital examinations and celebrations have been taken away from them as a result of national guidelines put in place to ensure the safety of both pupils and staff alike. During this time, the proceedings of Sixth Form institutions were fully under restrictions imposed by the government, and therefore did not have a broad say in how the school proceeded following lockdown. However, now that restrictions are easing and cases are dropping, schools and Sixth Forms are regaining localised control over the COVID-19 situation; therefore allowing them to choose how to respond as an institution alone from here onwards.

Earlier in the year, Sixth Forms and pupils were told that A Level examinations would not be proceeding, and that grades would be decided by teachers. However, in regards to recent easing of the restrictions, Sixth Forms, such as Monk's Walk School Sixth Form, have regained control over the steps they take regarding their Year 13 pupils from here on forth. After losing the opportunity to have almost two years of hard work assessed by fair examination in spring/summer 2020, Year 13 pupils at Monks Walk Sixth Form have also recently lost another opportunity, a crucial milestone in their final year of mandatory education; Results Day.

After two, abnormally stressful years, Year 13 pupils across Britain have missed out on a lot in regards to their education. Pupils at Monk's Walk School deserve more than a mere email containing their results as a final reward to celebrate their dedication and patience throughout both their time at the Sixth Form, and throughout the past few troubling months. Many schools across the nation are planning out a Results Day for their pupils that takes into consideration current guidelines from the government in regards to social distancing and large gatherings.

Monk's Walk Sixth Form, despite its larger year group sizing of the current Year 13's, has seemingly not even considered figuring out a plan in order to bring some finality and relief to its Year 13's. Many pupils were looking forward to Results Day, as it was a physical closing chapter to their studies, and their last chance to celebrate their hard work with their teachers and for their school life to return to some sort of normal before going their separate ways in September.

By signing this petition, you are calling to action the headteacher and the other staff involved in making this decision, asking them to take a second look; asking them if this is really the best they can do for their students.

There are multiple ways that the school could make Results Day a reality for its pupils:

  • Mandatory face coverings
  • Providing Hygienic solutions to students (i.e. hand sanitiser, opening certain toilets so that pupils and staff on site can wash their hands)
  • Imposing a one-way system on site
  • Mandatory social distancing of 2m
  • Staggered collection of results (i.e. students come to collect their results in smaller groups and are each allocated a 5-10 minute timeframe in which they may collect their results and request a meeting with appropriate members of staff regarding their results should it be needed)
  • Ensuring that the collection of results is conducted on school grounds, however main proceedings of the day are kept outside of school buildings

As you can clearly see by the above list, there are many ways that the school can still conduct a Results Day whilst ensuring the safety of both pupils and staff.

By August the 13th (Results Day), pubs will be open, hairdressers will be open, non-essential shops will be open and so many other businesses and institutions. So why, for one day, can Monk's Walk School not open its gates for Results Day?

I ask you to sign this petition if you are in agreeance that the school can do more for its pupils, and that a Results Day is the least the school could do in an attempt to bring well-deserved closure to their Year 13's during this difficult time.

Thank you.
