Change.org COVID-19 in Prisons Petition
Thank you for taking a moment to read my concerns and I urge you to sign my petition and to write a letter to Governor Kate Brown to address the dangerous effects facing our incarcerated fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, husbands and wives.
At this point everyone is well versed in the dangers and seriousness of COVID-19 and the strict practices necessary to stave off its most devastating consequences. Indeed, the need to change our social behaviors has impacted every aspect of society...except maybe one: our jails and prisons. It is our responsibility to care for all of those in our charge and prisoners are no different. It is our responsibility to reduce and prevent harm where harm can be reduced and prevented. But the necessary measures to prevent the spread of this deadly virus in lockup facilities are not being taken. This failure to adapt and take measures to dampen the spread among some of our most vulnerable is not only cruel, but delinquent in our duties. We must act now to take every possible measure to keep our families safe, whether they are quarantined with us at home or are incarcerated in the system. By signing this petition you are expressing your support that our incarcerated family members must have adequate ways to keep themselves safe during this pandemic.
Jails and prisons must start making space equipped to follow 6ft social distancing, Giving inmates proper basic necessities needed to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Maintaining clean and disinfected areas at all times. Implement a screening process for guards to make sure they are not bringing in the virus COVID-19. Inmates who have weakened immune systems they dont have the capacity to fight off COVID-19 due to health issues should go home on monitoring.

Our incarcerated family members are at the highest risk and are the least able to protect themselves from this pandemic.
Prison officials are unable and ill-equipped to comply with protocols and laws to prevent the spread of the virus.
The facilities are not being properly cleaned and sanitized, including phones and often-touched surfaces.
Guards have been showing up to work sick and are not being sent home. There have been numerous reported cases of guards and inmates being diagnosed with COVID-19.
Physical distancing protocols are nearly impossible to adhere to in the overcrowded facilities. Inmates are not able to follow 6ft social distancing due being over populated.
COVID-19 is in our jails and prisons. That is a fact. It is dangerous, lethal and highly contagious. It is imperative that prisons follow the same protocols we are all following to prevent the spread of this deadly virus.
For these unprecedented times, we need unprecedented solutions. First, inmates that have gate clearance and are half way through their time should go home on house arrest.
Secondly, every measure to adhere to the practices to prevent the spread of the virus must be implemented.
Proper cleaning and disinfecting of facilities to help prevent further cases of COVID-19.
