Jackson County, Oregon--as well as 21 other state counties--is named after Andrew Jackson, enslaver of African-Americans and person responsible for driving tens of thousands of Native Americans from their ancestral lands in the Southwestern U.S. via the Indian Removal Act of 1830--widely known as the Trail of Tears. This genocidal act caused most people and cultures of many southwestern Native American Tribes to perish, including the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee-Creek, Seminole, Cherokee, Shawnee, Wyandot, Kickapoo, Potowatomi, and Lenape peoples. Andrew Jackson was the 7th U.S. President.
